The Castle Walk
Begin your journey at the walls of Elbasan Castle, originally a 3rd-century Roman fortress, later reshaped by the Ottomans in the 15th century. Step through its massive gate, and you’re immediately surrounded by quiet stone paths, traditional homes, and echoes of history spanning over 1,500 years.
Inside, our first stop is the King Mosque, built in 1492—one of Albania’s oldest surviving mosques. Its minaret has called faithful to prayer for over five centuries. Just a few meters away stands the modest Saint Mary Orthodox Church, a peaceful reminder of the city’s remarkable religious harmony.
Between the two, you’ll walk over the ancient stones of the Via Egnatia, the Roman road that once linked the Adriatic to Byzantium—still visible, still solid beneath your feet after two millennia.
Nearby, the domes of the Old Ottoman Hammam rise quietly. Though no longer in use, the structure tells stories of ritual, rest, and everyday life centuries ago, when merchants and travelers would cleanse themselves after long journeys.
As we exit the castle through its original gates, our path leads to the ruins of the Paleochristian Basilica, where delicate 5th-century mosaics hint at Elbasan’s early Christian past, when this was a major stop for pilgrims heading to Constantinople.
The Weaving Workshop Experience
Our journey continues to a traditional carpet weaving workshop, where Albania's ancient textile heritage comes alive. Here, master weavers demonstrate the art of qilim creation—the bold, geometric carpets that have adorned Albanian homes for generations.
Watch as skilled artisans work at wooden looms, their hands moving with practiced precision honed over decades. Learn about the symbolic meanings woven into traditional patterns.
You'll discover how natural dyes are created from local plants—deep reds from madder root, golden yellows from weld, and rich blues from indigo. The wool itself comes from mountain sheep, spun by hand using techniques unchanged since Ottoman times.
